DBA Thesis check ins – Winter 2020

Two DBA students present their research at the annual check-in

Before we concluded the year that was 2020, two Doctoral candidates, Elsy Sarkis Garlough (USA) and Carlos Hernandez Carmona (Spain) presented their Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) theses progress at the end of year two check-in. In December both presented their research to the Geneva Business School research community, led by Dr. Oliver Elliot, the Head of Research at Geneva Business School.
Elsy is looking at having a better understanding of the challenges faced by leadership through the process of transitioning to AI technologies. Her research seeks to explore the protocols that leaders have adopted to manage disruption and examine the advantages procured so that to provide tools and offer insights to leaders who decide to go through this pathway.
She is investigating the manufacturing industry with her research question:

What is the impact of adopting Artificial Intelligence technologies on leadership?

Elsy Sarkis Garlough is a professional educator who established the Business Department within a new vocational-technical women’s college in Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia. She consults for several companies and industries in the Middle East with an emphasis on international business. She has previously developed policies and procedures and work-related processes that pertained to quality improvement through job analysis, and customized training plans for both non-profit and for-profit organizations and companies in Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. She also takes a proactive approach as a role model for Arab women entering business careers.

Using an exploratory research methodology including a case study and semi-structured interviews Elsy will be exploring the sub-questions:

  • Q1: What are the major challenges that leadership encounters through the transition to AI?
  • Q2: What are the new leadership skills required to be developed in the AI era?
  • Q3: Does applying AI technologies increase productivity? How?
  • Q4: Is leadership creativity enhanced by incorporating AI?

Her research will be complete in 2021.

Carlos Hernandez Carmona is a DBA candidate from Spain. He is deep-diving into multinational professional services firms’ leverage of strategic alliances and the intersection of internationalization alliances with the global pandemic.
His research question and thesis will incorporate a case study:

Why and how some MPSFs use alliances in their internationalization strategy? (before and during the Covid19 pandemic) – Auren / Antea Case Study

Carlos will complete his research thesis in 2021.
